Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Given its arbitrary colour, unbalanced composition and loosely handled paint, Fauvism’s critics saw in Derain’s Les Deux péniches /e> [Two Barges] no more than an unfinished sketch. Yet it is a painting rigorously conceived. Influenced by Japanese prints, Derain doesn’t show the sky, thus focusing attention on the surface of the water. The unusual framing in high-angle view comes from photography; cut off by it, the second barge clearly implies a space out of frame.
