Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Inspired by broken roof-glazing at the Gare de Lyon that had been repaired with tar, Pierre Soulages chose to use this material for its thickness, viscosity and depth of black. Applying it to broken sheets of glass, he plays on transparency and opacity. For Soulages, these powerful black marks are not be considered under their gestural aspect: “I’ve tried to strip the line of connotations of movement; I produced combinations of lines that present themselves […] as large signs that can be read in one go, then I realised one day that the drawings I was doing might recall Chinese characters.”
