Description for the presentation 2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

For Kader Attia, art has a therapeutic aspect, crucial to the reconstruction of a traumatised collective memory: “I like the idea that art can function as therapy for both artist and viewer”. A juxtaposition of wounded faces and repaired African artefacts, The Repair links the memory of war to that of colonisation and compares two antithetical attitudes to scarring, in which it is assumed and displayed or denied and hidden. Symbolic in Africa of accession to a new identity, in the West it mars the ideal of beauty and has to be concealed.
