Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Buste de femme is one of very many studies that Picasso did in 1906-1907 in preparation for his celebrated Demoiselles d’Avignon. It testifies to the great impact of so-called “primitive” art on Picasso, who had discovered ancient Iberian art at Gósol in Spain and then African art at the Musée du Trocadéro in Paris. The face is reduced to an inexpressive mask, lacking all humanity, the features disturbingly exaggerated. The grating colours and distorted and asymmetrical forms mark a radical break with traditional figurative representation. For Picasso, these works functioned as an “exorcism”.
