Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In 1907, after seeing the Cézanne exhibition in Paris, Georges Braque painted a series of landscapes at L’Estaque, one being a first version of the viaduct. In 1908, in Paris, he painted from memory another, shown here, focussed on the geometrical forms of the architecture. This testifies to a new and radically reduced vision of landscape. Among the earliest landmarks in the emergence of Cubism, Le Viaduc à l’Estaque was shown at the Kahnweiler gallery in Paris in the autumn of 1908.
