Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In 1913, Matisse moved into a building on the Quai Saint-Michel, where he would paint Intérieur, bocal de poissons rouges (Interior with Goldfish), one of his most complex meditations on space. It plays on the ambiguous relation between inside and outside (with the motif of the window), and between openness and enclosure (with the goldfish bowl). It is colour that brings about the unification of contraries, the blue – deep, pale or modulated, dense or translucent – omnipresent in its vibrant luminosity, even when covered with other colours.
