Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

The Japanese-born artist Foujita spent a great deal of time in Paris between 1913 and 1968. However, when he painted this picture in 1949, he was in New York, after living in Japan during the Second World War. At that time, the work embodied his memories of the Montparnasse district, where he had lived before the war alongside his friends Picasso, Soutine and Modigliani. This café scene features his typical hallmarks: a liberal use of white, flattened perspective and thin lines.
