This hieratic portrait of Francisco Iturrino, a Spanish painter close to Picasso, shows how André Derain combines his different sources of inspiration. A pioneer of Fauvism, interested before many others in so-called “primitive” art, Derain also admired the Old Masters. In fact, just as a triumphant Cubism was becoming the new orthodoxy, the Portrait d’Iturrino, in evoking the tradition of Spanish painting, foretells the “return to order” that will haracterise inter-war art.
