Description for the presentation in the National Museum of Modern Art

Two knights confront each other in a stylised forest announcing the shift to abstraction.

ln the paintings here entitled "Improvisations", Wassily Kandinsky summons up images from his imagination, as in this scene which he prepared in a drawing that belongs to the Museum, in which we can make out two knights and a tree. The references to nature are little more than allusions here, pretexts for the harmony of shapes and colours. The masses edged in black show the artist' s interest for Bavarian painting on glass .
