Description for the presentation 2018 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Chéri Samba began as a sign painter in Kinshasa before developing his own style in large and colourful figurative paintings inspired by African naïve art. His work is explicitly pedagogical, attacking the evils of African and later Western society with corrosive humour. The paintings always include a clearly legible text that underlines the intended message. Here he has painted a demonstration in support of the anti-AIDS campaign, whose slogans call on people to take preventive measures.
