František Kupka’s Autour d’un point is striking for its large format and for the density of its radially expanding composition. In this hymn to the circular, Kupka draws on both the lotus-flower symbol of his beginnings and his studies of the energetics of coloured discs. Suggesting not only the motion of the planets but the growth of organic forms and the thrum of the aura proper to each being, this painting is charged with a symbolism at once cosmic, biological and esoteric.
