Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In his Arlequin et femme au collier [Harlequin and Woman with a Necklace], a large composition executed in Rome in 1917, Picasso exploits to the full the collage aesthetic characteristic of late Cubism. The flat and geometrical forms seem to be superimposed, as suggested by the seemingly cut-out areas of blue, grey, black, white and “half-tone” dots. The whole suggests a meticulous decoupage, enlivened by a few more realist elements not without a certain humour of their own, such as the woman’s necklace and her pointed nose.
