In 1928, with the Soviet avant-gardes losing impetus, Malevich embarked on a new phase in his work with the transposition of the forms and pure colours of Suprematism into figurative painting. Here a man runs across a foreground of coloured bands. The bloodied blade of the sword underscores the threat emanating from the red building, which recalls the police jail where the artist was held in 1930.
