Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Arman’s work is marked by two tendencies: on the one hand, the impulse to conserve, evidenced in his Accumulations, boxes containing numbers of the same object; on the other, the wish to destroy expressed in the Colères or “Rages”, the first of which were carried out in public at the first Nouveau Réalisme festival in Paris in 1961. In attacking a musical instrument, symbol of harmony and culture, Arman expresses a destructive rage to which he gives durable form in reassembling the broken pieces in the manner of a Cubist collage – giving the result the ironic title Chopin’s Waterloo.
