Bouteille et verre (Bottle and Glass) is one of the best achieved of a group of sculptures that Laurens made between 1915 and 1918. Owing much to the Cubism of Picasso and Braque, and constructed of thin planes of wood and sheet metal, it is essentially to be viewed frontally, like Picasso's own sculptures. For Laurens, the voids are as important as the solids. Areas of shade are precisely defined by the polychromy that plays an essential role.
