Theo Van Doesburg believed that with Peinture pure in 1920 he had produced “an entirely flat composition whose central point is outside the painting”. The work is in fact structured by the juxtaposition of rectangles of solid colour that eliminate any illusion of perspective, as further emphasized by the unfinished aspect of the lower part. In accord with the other members of De Stijl, Van Doesburg sought to bring out the specificity of painting as opposed to other arts.
