Description for the presentation 2013 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In 1971, Alan Charlton began a series of pictures: grey monochromes. Never finished and constantly restarted, his entire body of work can be summed up in this series. Here he has made the deliberate choice of a minimalist pictorial practice, reduced to this anonymous gesture: the flat coating with paint of a canvas stretched on a frame. From one series to the next, the grey is asserted in an extended, subtle range of variations based on the shades of grey and the cut of the frames.
