Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Employed at the Bauhaus between 1921 and 1930, Klee explored the foundations of painting so as better to teach them to his pupils, working for example on the simplification of means and motifs. In Rhythmisches (1930) he uses a checkerboard pattern to explore the tensions between the three values of white, grey and black. Varying the size of the squares, he investigates their respective weights and their capacity to create rhythm, while the use of the knife to apply the paint creates a vibrancy accentuated by the ochre ground.
