Jérusalem céleste was part of Matisse’s work for the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, inaugurated in 1951. This is the first, half-size model produced by the artist for the large stained glass window, which went through three preliminary versions. With its geometrical composition and luminous colours, dominated by yellow and red, this sketch was one of the artist’s first fine gouache-painted paper cut-outs
