Description for the presentation 2011 in the National Museum of Modern Art

It was in 1978 that Allan McCollum came up with the idea that gained him widespread recognition, replacing the painting with an equivalent. A generic product reproducing key features of the picture with mat and frame, the replacement has the minimum formal characteristics that allow an artefact hung on the wall to be considered an artwork. These casts, produced from rubber moulds from 1982 onward, show that in its social role the painting is no more than a sign of painting. Alongside the production of these Plaster Surrogates, McCollum takes photos of magazine or TV images that feature pain...
