Description for the presentation 2018 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Hanne Darboven’s large, minimalist installations are made up of grids of hand-written figures, sometimes combined with images or texts, as in the case of Für Jean-Paul Sartre. The work is based on calculations performed on Sartre’s date of birth – 21 June 1905 – and the seventy years elapsed by the time of the creation of the installation. Figures, methodological reflections and crossings-out are accompanied by extracts from Sartre’s Les Mots [Words]. For Darboven, the numbers represent a universal language, but are also markers of the passage of time.
