Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

American artist Sam Francis, who lived in Paris between 1950 and 1958, found inspiration first in the grey light of the capital and then in the intenser luminosity of Aix-en-Provence. Here he presents a white that pervades the whole surface of the canvas, itself pervaded by the diaphanous, greyish blue of barely articulated marks that evokes, says J.-J. Sweeney, “the substance of which light is made”.
