Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In the Twenties, Monteiro painted native myths and scenes of Brazil. He made use of geometric figuration and ornamentation similar to those in the ceramics of Marajoara, a pre-Columbian civilisation of the Amazon. A Caçada is a fine example of this, with its schematic figures marked by muscular tension and interlocking motifs inspired by the work of Fernand Léger. The reduced, monochrome palette and chiaroscuro effects add to the solemnity of the scene.
