Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

“Real painting will begin when people understand that colour has a life of its own”, wrote Sonia Delaunay. For her, the life of colour found expression in celebration of its luminosity and mobility. Sonia Delaunay here relies on the principle of “simultaneous contrast”, which exploits the optical properties of colours to so stimulate the viewer’s eye that its path through the work is structured by a regular rhythm. The repetition of the motif of the disc accentuates the sinusoidal energy of the work, which seems to radiate beyond the canvas.
