Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

After spending a number of years in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and New York, Torres-García returned to Montevideo in 1934. Here he started up the magazine “School of the South”, which both disseminated modern theories on art and established primitivism at the heart of his artistic approach. A “Planist” construction, Pez takes up the rectangular structures of his constructivist paintings while breaking away from the confines of the picture. Here the artist mingles together abstraction and figuration, raw materiality and painted composition.
