Pierre Klossowski’s literary work, informed by the examples of Gide and Rilke, is inseparable from his art. Begun in the early 1950s, the latter long remained a personal affair, unlike that of his brother Balthus. For Klossowski, the drawing often came before the writing, allowing him to flesh out his visions. Anachronistic in technique, evoking the over-familiar subjects of art history, his drawing subversively recycles the stereotypes of academic figuration.
