Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

This painting is one of the series “Marionnettes de la ville et de la campagne” (1942-1945), the first fruit of Jean Dubuffet’s shift to the production of paintings in coherent groups. Paysage vineux has the shared features of the series – frontality, clumsiness, freedom of colour – but already heralds later concerns in the elaboration of its treatment of the paint. For Dubuffet, the rejection of perspective answers to “the goal of painting [which] is to decorate flat surfaces”; so “the objects thereby represented will be transformed into pancakes, as if flattened by a pressing iron”.
