Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

“I like modelling as much as painting”, said Henri Matisse, who relied on the practice of both arts in perfecting his approach to line. Produced between 1909 and 1930, the four versions of Nu de dos, develop in parallel to his painting, echoing his painterly preoccupations. Matisse produced each new version on the basis of the last, reworking the plaster proofs. From one to the next he flattens and removes material, simplifies, until the figure becomes structurally integrated with space: by the time of Nu de dos IV (1930), form has become virtually autonomous.
