"I painted turning my back on what was in front of me." (Chagall)

From his Parisian studio, Marc Chagall painted the memory of a Jewish wedding in his native city. ln this composition in the form of a frieze, the bridal couple are preceded by musicians in long coats and followed by highly colourful characters, while a water carrier observes the scene with a smile. The multicoloured banners drowning out the sky and the vanishing lines at the foot of this scene of folk life are reminiscent of the Orphic paintings of Robert and Sonia Delaunay, with whom Chagall struck up a friendship from the b...
