Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

At the beginning of the century, Derain was one of the first artists to take an interest in African and Oceanic art. Here the swaying stance and exaggeratedly round breasts betray the influence of Indian sculpture, while there are more general references to the archaic features of so-called primitive art, right through to Roman sculpture. These references are evident in the respect for the limestone block with its rough, unfinished look, as well as the accentuated geometrisation.
