Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In 1954, Jasper Johns began to make paintings in wax depicting different kinds of symbols: flags, targets, alphabets and figures. Figure 5 perfectly exemplifies the doubling that so fascinated Johns in these. Brushed in black and white, in broad strokes that in places allow the newspaper pasted on the canvas to show through, the figure is simultaneously graphic inscription and pictorial representation. While still a number written on a surface, it is also an autonomous form that refers only to itself, detached from its symbolic function.
