Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In 1936, the Chilean-born Matta joined the Surrealist movement. Here, is he showing us a world of science fiction or an image of war? In any case, we see a new image of mankind, halfway between the impulses of life and death, struggling with no points of reference in the heart of disaster. A single movement slashes through mankind and this world made of supple, nervous lines and traces of brush or rag. This freedom of gesture was to have an impact on New York’s younger generation.
