Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

In 1942, Lam left Europe and returned to his native Cuba. He then produced works mingling avant-garde influences and the Afro-Caribbean cultural heritage. He wrote, “I wanted with all my heart to paint the drama of my country, but by thoroughly expressing the negro spirit, the physical aesthetic of the blacks. In this way I could act as a Trojan horse that would spew forth hallucinating figures with the power to surprise, to disturb the dreams of the exploiters.”
