Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Robert Delaunay very soon sought to express on canvas the dazzle of the sunlight he studied both in nature and through reading scientific texts. Formes circulaires, Soleil n°2 is one of a series of paintings evoking sun or moon, each of which explores colour’s capacity to generate movement. In this version, a single isolated disc decentered on the canvas suggests the rotatory movements of the heavens. The succession and fusion of the coloured rings generate a vibratory quality in the image, while the saturation that gives force to the contrast of colours confers great power on this sun-like...
