Description for the presentation 2013-2014 in the National Museum of Modern Art

Maruja Mallo was one of the few women in the “Generation of 27” group, which brought together artists and writers. Kermesse depicts a multicoloured crowd made up of angels, pigs and members of the clergy, in a space marked by different scales. The artist paints life as a theatre. The grotesque transcription of these popular masquerades, where order is undermined and class differences disappear, is reminiscent of Goya’s work.
