Description for the presentation in the National Museum of Modern Art

Bathed in a grey monochrome, like Guernica later, this composition resembles a dreamlike vision.

A studio-boutique situated in Rue de La Boétie, opposite his apartment, is thought to have inspired Pablo Picasso to create this difficult-to-interpret painting. The attentive eye nevertheless discerns three women sewing and the profile of a character behind a door (the artist himself?). The confusion of curves and counter-curves is not without suggesting the biomorphic forms of the Surrealist artists that Picasso drew close to at the time.
