Description for the presentation 2015-2016 in the National Museum of Modern Art

The building with its terrace roof and the two silhouettes in green djellabas evoke memories of Kandinsky’s voyage to Tunisia in 1905. Here the colour is free, the references allusive, the artist seeking not to faithfully represent a scene but to communicate a vision. This is one of a series of Improvisations, chiefly featuring images arisen from the unconscious. The figure of the cloaked horseman at the centre might recall the St George or St Martin of Bavarian popular art, whose devotional images the artist had discovered in Murnau.
