Founded in 1976 on the initiative of Édouard Balladur and with the support Madame Georges Pompidou, the ADCP is a non-profit association with charitable status whose goals are to support the Centre Pompidou in its double mission of promoting culture and supporting contemporary art and to help ensure its development as an institution.

Its president since 2010 has been Jack Lang, former minister of culture. Former prime minister Édouard Balladur, President Georges Pompidou’s closest collaborator during his time in office, is honorary president.
