AWARE
Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions
With twelve years of experience as a non-profit organisation, AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions joined the Centre Pompidou and became part of the Musée National d’Art Moderne in January 2026 in order to continue and expand its commitment to increasing the visibility of women and non-binary artists, as well as to fostering the writing and dissemination of a more inclusive cultural history. AWARE represents a diversity of voices, brought together by researchers, curators, feminist art historians, critics, and activists from around the world.
Co-founded in 2014 by Camille Morineau, curator and art historian—who notably curated the landmark display "elles@centrepompidou. Women Artists in the Collections of the Musée National d’Art Moderne" (2009–2011)—AWARE works to rebalance the presence of women and non-binary creators in cultural history and thought. Its scope covers visual and applied arts, architecture, and design, from the 16th century to the present, with no limitations on medium or country.
Production and dissemination of scholarly resources
Through its trilingual website's database (French / English / Japanese), AWARE freely provides access to a wide range of resources, including:
- Biographical entries written by around 500 contributors
- Research articles and interviews that contextualise artists’ careers and works within larger artistic movements, social changes, and feminist thinking
- Thematic focuses, podcast series, and animated videos, designed to make this knowledge accessible to all audiences, including younger visitors
To widely share research on women artists and gender studies, AWARE also organises conferences, roundtables, and seminars in partnership with institutions, universities, museums, and independent structures internationally.
AWARE also publishes its own editorial publications.
AWARE Prizes
The AWARE Prizes aim to recognise the work of women and non-binary artists connected to the French art scene, address their lack of visibility in France and internationally, and highlight both their artistic contributions and the longevity of their careers, beyond stereotypes. Created in 2016 to address the lack of gender parity in contemporary art prizes, each year, the New Regard Prize recognises a mid-career artist; the Outstanding Merit Prize honours an artist with over 40 years of career experience.
From now on, these prizes will also enable works by the laureates to enter the collection of the Centre Pompidou – Musée National d’Art Moderne.
Research programmes and international networks
Teaching, E-learning, Agency, Mentoring is an international academic network dedicated to creating resources on women artists with the aim of training a new generation of researchers sensitive to gender issues in art history.
AWARE Museum Initiative and Support brings together museums from around the world to collect and share research on women artists produced for exhibitions, acquisitions, and collections.
Network for Empowerment, Solidarity and Transregionality brings together independent structures from different countries working at the intersection of visual art, activism and gender studies to unite their forces and give visibility to women and non-binary artists.
