Henry Darger spent his entire life as a quasi-recluse, hidden in his small room in Chicago. There, the self-taught artist created one of the most fascinating bodies of pictorial work in the history of Art Brut - which wouldn’t be discovered until after his death in 1973.
As part of the exhibition “Art Brut. In the Intimacy of a Collection. The Decharme Donation at the Centre Pompidou”, the “Insider-Outsider” project is an interactive musical experience in virtual reality, inspired by Henry Darger's work and created by musician Philippe Cohen Solal (Gotan Project).

It combines pop music (taken from the “Outsider” album composed by Cohen Solal and Mike Lindsay), animations and artistic performances. The piece draws from The Story of the Vivian Girls in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, an artwork/world that Darger worked on for over 30 years.
“Insider-Outsider” invites participants to plunge into the fantastical and disturbing world of the “Vivian Girls”, young children fighting the cruelty of the world and facing storms and tornadoes...
This reconstruction is based on painstaking documentary research, using photographic sources and many testimonials, by scenographer Jérôme Clermont from Atelier Obermant.
