Riad Sattouf, Autoportrait

After exhibitions devoted to Art Spiegelman, Claire Bretécher and André Franquin, the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Bpi) is paying homage to the work of the cartoonist and filmmaker Riad Sattouf, creator of La Vie secrète des jeunes, Pascal Brutal, Cahiers d’Esther and L’Arabe du futur.

At barely 40 years old, Riad Sattouf has already amassed a body of work that is enormously prolific, both in terms of artistic expression and style: from press cartoon strips to graphic novels, sci-fi films to social commentaries and web series. With a keen eye for observing life, which sometimes verges on the sociological, Riad Sattouf creates characters, stories and dialogues that constitute a discourse on society, its structures and its tensions. Analysis of the author’s use of colours, treatments and techniques sheds invaluable light on his exuberant worlds. The exhibition also reveals his sources of inspiration and his great interest in certain masters of illustration and film.

Via numerous original and unique documents, discover the graphic universe of Riad Sattouf, his pointed and tender take on adolescence, the wealth of references, his style of storytelling and the often autobiographical dimension inherent in his work.
