The film S. H. Raza, The Very Essence is part of a collection of documentaries entitled "Living Legends of Indian Contemporary Art", created to preserve the visual and audio imprint of the generation of artists who, in the 1940s, along with Raza, M. F. Husain, Akbar Padamsee, Krishen Khanna and others, laid the foundations of post-independence modern art in India. Shot on a minimalist budget, in the course of shoots spread over nearly two years between France and India, this film has become a self-portrait of the artist.

After training as an architect, Laurent Brégeat gravitated toward film, working as assistant to Tony Richardson and Samuel Fuller, among others, before shooting fictions for television. He turned only recently to making documentaries with a series of films on contemporary Indian artists.
