ln the mid-1950s, Jasper Johns adopted simple flat motifs for his paintings: targets, American flags, figures and letters.
Brushed with black and white, treated with broad strokes of encaustic and letting the newspaper pasted on the canvas show through in places, the figure 5 becomes an object of painting. The camouflage treatment nevertheless makes it disappear in favour of a gestural and abstract painting. Johns introduces a complex and subtle play in the perception of form and content.
