Tauba Auerbach has since some years been producing her ‘fold paintings’ using a complex technique. She first folds her canvas to produce the desired creases, before laying it out flat again. She then paints it with a spray-gun aimed at different angles, in imitation of the angled fall of light. When she finally mounts it on a stretcher, the creases remain visible even when stretched, the paint retaining the trace of the previous state of the canvas. This way of spraying the creases creates an effect of three-dimensionality that recalls the tradition of trompe-l’oeil painting.
