Jungwirth worked on this large format by laying it flat on the floor and moving around it, allowing splashes and accidental marks of colour to be part of the process.
A major figure of the intermediate generation between the Viennese Actionists and Franz West, whose studio she took over, Martha Jungwirth's painting is at the frontier between figuration and abstraction. Watercolour on paper was her preferred technique for several decades. In this work, a round shape like a head with turquoise eyes rises up from the magma of watercolour. It is a "portrait" of historian Alfred Schmeller, the artist' s husband who died in 1990.
