Houghton paved the way for transcendental abstraction.
Georgiana Houghton was devoted to painting nature, a practice she abandoned on the death of her young sister. She then took an interest in spiritualism and became a "medium artist" in 1861, completely renewing her style to represent the spirits of loved ones that she transposed into purely abstract drawings. Two theories can explain this radical change: like the pioneers of transcendental abstraction in the early 20th century, she represents spiritual existence. In addition, as a woman-artist, Houghton had no access to drawing classes, so she made mediumship into a new medium.
