This ensemble addresses the censorship applied in Japan on illustrated publications and the legal ambiguities surrounding the notion of obscenity.
Éric Baudelaire explores the bokashi, a Japanese form of censorship which consists in scratching all images "which unnecessarily excite or stimulate sexual desire". These heliogravure prints are enlargements of the scratching on western art magazines. 1 n the video, a bookshop employee receives art books; she scratches certain images, firstly of nudity, then of landscapes and abstract works. Her gesture of self-censorship can be seen as a form of poetry of the absurd, a ritual which transforms into a reflection on the power of images.
