Boule suspendue
[1930 / 1931]
Giacometti's sculpture is the first of the "objects with a symbolic function" designed by the Surrealists.
Acquired by the poet André Breton two years after its creation, this work consists of a piece of wood that replicates an initial plaster model. It depicts an incised globe positioned on a crescent shape with a protruding edge, the ensemble being symbolically enclosed in a cage. These organic forms reminiscent of female and male sexual organs seem to be on the point of coming to life in a rocking movement. This metaphor for the act of mating blends desire and violence ta evoke unconscious fantasies. Fascinated by the erotic power of this work, the Surrealists were inspired by it to design their own assemblages of objects.
