Composition en rouge, bleu et blanc II
1937
The spacing of the black lines in the upper part leave a lot of space for the white, creating a sensation of elevation.
After painting a series of realistic landscapes, little by little Piet Mondrian drew their essential lines. All that remained was the horizontals and the verticals, which he organised into orthogonal grids. This radical abstraction, known as Neoplasticism, abandoned all details and particularities. All that survives is pure rhythm, which varies in accordance with the thickness of the black, the density of the intersections and the presence of coloured blacks and white rectangles.
