The Thinker
(Le Penseur)
2001
A large black column housing a bank of computers running an artificial life programme, evolutionary and unpredictable, The Thinker pays technological homage to Rodin, the thinker here both thinking and thought of. A contemporary cousin to the mysterious monolith of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the sculpture is one of a series inspired by the Seven Wonders of the World, described by the artist as “a series of works that relate to things I find wondrous. I wanted to make works that were not illustrative of some scientific or philosophical theory but embodied it – were in fact the actual theory made manifest”.
